The European Organization for Nuclear Research, better known worldwide by the acronym CERN, is one of the world’s leading laboratories for particle physics.
Physicists at CERN design and run the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments and particle accelerators to study the basic building blocks of matter – subatomic particles – which they do by slamming them together at nearly the speed of light.
That gives physicists insights into how the smallest building blocks of our universe interact, giving us more understanding of the fundamental laws of nature.
Founded in 1954, the CERN laboratory, which sits on both sides of the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva, was one of Europe’s first multi-country ventures.
Now Helmes is helping CERN with its operations after being selected as one of the business computing unit’s official software development and digitalization partners.
According to Tarmo Kiivit, a Helmes partner, the scope of the cooperation is long-term and strategic, and the first projects help advance CERN’s HR and security application systems.

In their tender, CERN was looking for a long-term strategic digitalization partner with relevant software development and digitalization experience in both the public and private sectors.
“We have two teams involved in developing CERN systems: our Java team works with HR solutions, and the design team is renewing their safety portal design and user experience,” Kiivit said. “We have a great rapport with CERN teams and similar agile development culture, which makes for a successful long-term cooperation.”
